Pindad and SAAB Sweden Build Missile Product

PT Pindad (Persero) together with SAAB Sweden established a strategic cooperation to develop Ground Based Air Defence (GABD) produced in Indonesia to be proposed to Indonesian Armed Forces (TNI). The result of this cooperation is a product showcased in Indo Defence Expo & Forum 2016. The missile product RBS70 NG Manpads and Radar Giraffe 1X owned by SAAB are being showcased in PT Pindad (Persero) indoor booth and also tactical vehicle produced by PT Pindad (Persero), Komodo, is being showcased at Jakarta International Expo (JIExpo) outdoor area on November 2-5, 2016.

PT Pindad CEO Abraham Mose said that this cooperation is intended to meet the needs of TNI in Air Defence Artillery (Arhanud). “Pindad and SAAB cooperate in the scope of technology transfer and joint production in the air defence weapon system field. This is done in order for us to meet the technological needs given by customers in Arhanud,” he stated. The technology transfer process will be continued with designing, production, and assembling process domestically with the product characteristics adapted into Indonesia’s needs.

In this cooperation scope, PT Pindad will be receiving turnkey solution, which is missile RBS70 NG equipped with Giraffe 1X radar added into tactical vehicle product produced by Pindad, Komodo. RBS70 NG is a missile with latest technology which provides integrated modular air defense specifically designed to enable flexible troops deployment option. RBS70 NG observation system is also equipped with features like thermal imager, auto tracker, dan Identification Friend or Foe (IFF).

RBS70 NG air defence system can be used by personnel called Man-Portable Air Defence System (MANPADS) and also installed in various type of combat vehicle, and RBS70 NG can also be integrated with long-range network and control.

Meanwhile Giraffe 1X is a radar that can move dynamically for close-range supervising and Ground Air Base Defence (GBAD). Giraffe 1X can alarm an early warning and have the ability to detect and track hundreds of targets at the same time, even for an environment with high level turmoil. Giraffe 1X is very light with very little integration trace. Even one set of complete radar can be carried by pick-up sized truck and brought by a helicopter or pulled by a trailer. Giraffe 1X can be permanently installed in a building or a pole, or integrated into a suitable vehicle.

In a short term, Pindad will have a competence centre with full support for maintenance and repair for RBS70 and radar system Giraffe 1X. As for long-term, technology transfer process will build domestic capacity for design, development, production, assembling, testing, and logistic support.

Abraham Mose explained that with this cooperation, Pindad will escalate its capability to master the missile and radar technology, in order to meet customers’ need and Indonesia’s air defence and security. “The threats of air defence today have evolved, from manned threats to unmanned threats. It is needed for national defence industry capabilities to escalate to master the missile and radar technology. This cooperation between Pindad and SAAB is intended to actualized it,” stated Abraham.

The cooperation of Pindad and SAAB began with the signing of joint proposal at Eurosatory in 2015 and until today have passed various progresses from holding one day workshop to joint seminar with Badan Pengkajian dan Penerapan Teknologi (BPPT) and the whole policy makers from the Defence Ministry as well as national defence industry.
